A fourth thread evolved during the course of the exhibition\, the Australian landscape. \nAll the works for the exhibition make use of the ‘existing’: something that already is within reality\, from physical found objects\, and lived experiences & observations\, to historical memory\, both national and personal. These fragments are collected and reconstructed into contemporary artefacts. When observations become form repurposes the past into visual poems that attempt to illuminate the present. \n-Lee Salomone\, December 2020 \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]VIEW AVAILABLE WORKS [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:The Elegance of Spring collection | Sam Michelle
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This body of work celebrates the freedom of post lockdown with beautiful blooms discovered at Sam Michelle‘s favourite florists and nurseries around Melbourne. These flowers are mixed with others from Sam’s garden. In lockdown one\, Sam cleared out vast spaces in her garden to make room for flowers she was growing from seed. Sam has taken a particular interest in the challenge of painting detailed\, intricate flowers\, such as the bearded iris. \nFast forward to lockdown two\, Sam has a blooming garden of peonies\, poppies\, billy buttons\, cornflowers\, cosmos\, nigella along with a range of hydrangeas\, dahlias\, Japanese anemones & sunflowers which are interspersed throughout this collection of paintings. The Elegance of Spring honours the intoxicating capacity of a flower to remind us to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]View Sam Michelle’s Profile [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:The Gloaming | Kirrily Hammond
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Gloaming is an old English term for twilight and combines a sense of poetic romance with a mysterious undercurrent. Kirrily Hammond’s intimate paintings depict Brunswick streetscapes in the early evening light\, when buildings retain a glow from the fading afternoon sun\, shadows coalesce and powerlines glimmer in flickering streetlights. Through delicate layering of oil paint on linen\, Hammond renders quietly seductive images that reveal sublime encounters in suburban environments.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid gap=”20″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1602563454344-b5317745-b7e5-4″ include=”4625\,4628\,4620\,4624\,4622\,4582\,4595\,4597\,4583″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Song of Solitude | Kirrily Hammond
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Gippsland Twilight is an ongoing series of oil paintings loosely based on my travels on Victorian roads at the end of the day\, when the light is fading and the landscape becomes indistinguishable\, punctuated by the glow of car headlights and street lamps. SUMMARY:Brunswick East | Kirrily Hammond
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Kirrily Hammond’s paintings stand as small testaments to everyday vistas. It is a tale of resilience\, of the pride and prejudices against social and political injustices of early Australia and the tries and tribulations of rural settlement. \nMeet my cousins. They are painted in Yangerdin country\, in the south west of West Australia where my pioneering story begins. They are wearing dresses made from the banksia ashbyi\, a metaphoric fabric representing the spirit and resilience\, the mettle through the ages\, of the women in our family. The flower spikes and fruiting cones have born\, in feast and famine drought and downpour\, buds of great beauty and artistry in their capacity to overcome adversity. \nBotanical and animal forms are a prominent and integral part of my artwork.  They are often multi-dimensional as they profile the living physical elements of the Australian landscape whilst being metaphors for the spiritual and intellectual context. Our psychological response to our environment is a constant muse and thread to my pieces.\n– Lori Pensini[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Cloud Memory | Sue Lovegrove
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Sue Lovegrove’s paintings from the last few years have translated her experiences from wild and remote islands including Macquarie Island\, Maatsuyker Island and most recently Tasman island – an uninhabited\, windy\, cliff-walled\, isolated island off the South East coast of Tasmania. \nShe has visited Tasman Island several times to investigate the aesthetics of wind and how it imprints onto the animate and intangible; the flora\, landscape or our own bodies. \nHer 2011 series\, titled The Shape of the Wind\, explored the effect of wind on the native grasses on the windswept Tasman Island. More recently\, she has become interested in the spatial form of air movement in the sky. \nThis current group of paintings Cloud Memory\, focuses on the transitory form of clouds. The way clouds take shape and then dissolve into scribbles\, explosions and loops – like writing the wind in sky. Lovegrove thinks of these forms as metaphors for states of being\, quietly alluding to ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’ a 14th Century religious text that presents a series of meditations on emptying out the mind – ‘a cloud of forgetting’.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”3″ gap=”15″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1601871296995-fd7d7221-b8b8-10″ include=”4900\,4899\,4894\,4898\,4895\,4896\,4897\,16945″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT SUE LOVEGROVE [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Glimpse | Sue Lovegrove
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Artist Statement:\nMy work has always been about an intimate and personal experience of particular landscapes where I have spent time. These are often remote and isolated places that are relatively free of the presence of human beings: Antarctica\, Macquarie Island\, Maatsuyker Island and most recently\, Tasman Island. These are all places where the weather and the wildlife dominate and where the balance and order is still in favour of the natural world rather than the human world.   \nTasman Island is a wild and rugged uninhabited island off the SE coast of Tasmania. It bears the brunt of the weather blowing up from the Southern Ocean as well as from the Tasman to the East. It is a place that is spectacular\, because of the steep high cliffs that surround the island and exposed because the original vegetation that covered the island has mostly been removed from several generations of lighthouse keepers. The dominant vegetation remaining on the island is a mix of grasses\, both native and pasture escapees which grow up to a metre high densely covering about 70% of the island. To me the grasses are interesting both culturally and aesthetically. They are often disregarded or seen as insignificant in the ecological scheme of things\, and yet they harbour a vast biodiversity and the mixture of indigenous and non-indigenous species growing tangled together and competing for space strangely echoes the bigger world.   \nThe chaotic natural weaving of the grasses reflects the way they are shaped by the wind and weather\, which can be quite extreme at times.  – Sue Lovegrove[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid gap=”15″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1601870257400-e63e8323-4b96-4″ include=”4888\,4889\,4892\,4887\,4890\,4891″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT SUE LOVEGROVE [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Welcome to Country | Christopher Pease
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In 1826\, French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville set out to circumnavigate the world in the corvette l’Astrolabe. With a crew including artist Louis Auguste de Sainson\, l’Astrolabe anchored in Kingn George Sound (the site of Albany\, WA) on October 15th\, 1826. \nDuring ten days on the south-west coast\, the crew including de Sainson\, explored the surrounding area and had dealings with the Minang people. De Sainson produced a number of sketches documenting the expedition which were produced as a folio of lithographs in 1833. \nThe paintings in this exhibition are derived in part from de Sainson’s 19th century lithographs. The largest painting\, Welcome to Country\, replicates part of a small de Sainson work held in the National Gallery of Australia\, while Land Release 3 and Open Plan Living refer directly to a work held in the Art Gallery of Western Australia. \nThese works explore the conflicts and connections between traditional indigenous culture and contemporary western ideologies. Geometric house floor plans float symbolically over carefully rendered scenes of traditional living while native and introduced flora morph into wall-paper designs featuring repetitive motifs and regimented decorative patterns. \nPease’s approach is deeply embedded within Australia’s colonial history of oil painting yet provides a new interpretation of indigenous storytelling.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid gap=”15″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1601602696224-1b7f20be-1f00-6″ include=”4425\,4422\,4424\,4426\,4423\,4421\,4420″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT CHRISTOPHER PEASE [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Behind the Veil | Dadang Christanto
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In May 1998\, a wave of racially fuelled violence swept through Jakarta\, directed primarily at Indonesians of Chinese heritage. During two anarchic days\, more than 1\,000 people were murdered and hundreds of women were brutally assaulted. \nBehind the Veil addresses the aftermath of these atrocities. It lays bare the anguish\, grief and shame that is suffered in silence by many of Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese. \nDadang Christanto is an internationally recognised artist who has been included in many international art events including; Venice Biennale (2003)\, Yogyakarta Biennial\, Jakarta\, Indonesia (2003)\, Kwangju Biennale\, South Korea (2000)\, the first and third Asia-Pacific Triennials of Contemporary Art\, Brisbane (1993 & 1999)\, the Bienal de Sao Paulo\, Brazil (1998) and the Sydney Biennale (2010). SUMMARY:Other Worlds | Catherine Nelson
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Catherine Nelson’s new series Other Worlds continues her investigation of utopian perspectives\, where micro and macro elements are equally weighted and simultaneously insight. With the eye and training of a painter and years of experience in film special effects\, Nelson composes her monumental images from thousands of photographs\, relying on her painter’s sensibility for colour and composition. \nThese meticulously detailed floating worlds transport the viewer to a fantasy utopia where beauty in nature is paramount\, while quietly encouraging reflection on the world’s changing environment[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid gap=”10″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1599109867490-425ae6ca-ddca-5″ include=”4557\,4551\,4552\,4553\,4554\,4555\,4556″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT CATHERINE NELSON [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Expedition | Catherine Nelson
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Catherine Nelson was born in Sydney and studied painting at the College of Fine Art\, graduating in 1996. Shortly after completing her studies she commenced a career in film and digital media but in 2008 she returned to the studio to focus on her art practice. Of this she says\, “When I embraced the medium of photography\, I felt that taking a picture that represented only what was within the frame of the lens wasn’t expressing my personal and inner experience of the world around me. With the eye and training of a painter and with years of experience behind me in film visual effects\, I began to take my photos to another level.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”6″ gap=”10″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1599108673296-7470e4e2-0bc9-9″ include=”4546\,4550\,4547\,4548\,4549″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT CATHERINE NELSON [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Tightly arranged within narrow spaces\, these objects convey a theatricality and surreal beauty\, which overwhelms and subverts their role as objects of scientific certainty. \nIn this current series\, insects infiltrate the sterile environment of the museum store\, drawn to these artificial replicas of the plant world. We can call her and her forms by name but it isn’t necessarily what she answers to. Her spiritual cues are more subtle\, almost invisible in our modern world discern. There is a constant push and pull between transparency and opacity in the landscape\, where the physical making of us facilitates the metaphysical marking and the in-between things give way to the fullness. If we unfurl to it that is. \nSome days when I walk through the bush on our farm I am drawn backwards\, enchanted and completely lost in the story book of my mind. Memory ribbons fluttering haplessly with no order\, forming bewildering spectrums of illumination into my shaping. At other times I am present to the living moment\, and my senses acute and collected in admiration and wonderment at the physical forms I witness. \nMy Wanderland exhibition is a collection of this ‘in- between and fullness’ we experience when we tender ourselves to the natural world. The paintings offer insights into experiences of immersion\, of sanctity and intimacy that transcends ourselves into that place of lightness within. \nLori Pensini\n2020 \nView available works from Wanderland here.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT LORI PENSINI [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Oversized\, hand-built vases\, pitchers\, bowls and wall discs provide a canvas upon which the artist depicts botanical specimens\, insects and birds. This series considers the loss of habitat from  devastating bushfires which ravaged large tracts of country along the coast in the summer of 19/20. \n“These ceramic objects depict a range of location specific species including Banksia Serrata which grows along the eastern Victorian coastline and Snow Gum found in high country along with bird species found in Victoria.I spend as much time as I can in the natural world. I walk\, camp and observe particular trees of interest to me\, and the birds and insects that live within the confines of a particular species. If feel it is extremely important for me as an artist to paint the Australian environment and highlight it’s beauty and value at a time when it seems increasingly under threat from land clearing\, drought and fire.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”3″ grid_id=”vc_gid:1600406409453-e70c0765-6dac-0″ include=”14823\,15422\,14828\,16212\,15421\,15418\,15409\,15417\,15425\,14837\,16214\,14811\,14849\,14833\,15412\,14829\,16213”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]MORE ABOUT FIONA HISCOCK [/vc_column][/vc_row]

Inspiration was found from my everyday world\, from wild thistles in France\, to European Magpies in my neighbour’s yard. Such instability resonated throughout these images in subtle ways. A seagull hovers on shaky ground\, the gladiolus flowers disjointed and cut up\, indigo woodcuts polarise and intercept the tranquil watercolour Dutch landscapes. Some works sit on shelves\, intimate and fragile – fragments of time leaning into the stability of wall\, holding onto a tiny element of solidity in a most unstable time. Others are a pure expression of gratitude for the beautiful moments nature has provided whilst in lockdown. \n‘The News Pounded II’\, (a title borrowed by Patti Smith in her fabulous book I was reading in January 2020 ‘The year of the monkey’)\, was an epic work to complete and I really loved seeing this one through to its end. The energy and rhythm\, the sharp and soft\, it’s a life force. It refuses to yield to the pounding. It is a centre-piece full of life in all its subtle and harsh beauty.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]View Belinda Fox’s artist’s page [/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Mellorado | Paula do Prado
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Mellorado begins and ends with Paula do Prado’s flight half way around the world as a child. Born in Montevideo\, Uruguay\, do Prado left her extended Uruguayan family and migrated to Australia with her parents Jorge and Laura when she was eight years old. The exhibition highlights important aspects of her personal and cultural explorations since that time. Tracing her roots back to the African slave trade of the 1800s\, do Prado reflects on the richness of Uruguay’s Afro-Latin heritage and the legacy of familial bonds in a bid to reconcile her multifaceted cultural identity. \nLo que se hereda no se roba.\nWhat is inherited\, can’t be stolen (Its’ in the blood).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
