Keith Burt
Keith Burt is an award-winning painter and sculptor who creates from his studio in Brisbane, Australia. He has been shortlisted for multiple awards including the Archibald Prize on several occasions, and in 2023 was also a finalist for the Wynne Prize. In 2020, Burt was awarded the Brisbane Portrait Prize for his double portrait Urban Artists and recently, his bronze sculpture was highly commended by the judges in the McLelland Gallery and Sculpture Park inaugural Maquette Award.
As a painter, Burt describes his painted subjects with restrained brushstrokes. Confident daubs of paint create solid
forms, capturing topographies of objects and people alike. Oscillating between still life, portraiture and landscape, Burt’s limited palette and spare paint application emphasises the beauty of simplicity, highlighting the quieter moments of existence.
Burt’s sculpted works are hand modelled to emphasise form. Textured figures are built to create a synchronicity between form and weight. Burt takes a classical genre to new heights by adding paint to the surfaces of his bronze works, adding a contemporary edge to an age-old medium.
