Behind the Veil | Dadang Christanto

AUGUST 1, 2010 - AUGUST 28, 2010

In May 1998, a wave of racially fuelled violence swept through Jakarta, directed primarily at Indonesians of Chinese heritage. During two anarchic days, more than 1,000 people were murdered and hundreds of women were brutally assaulted.

Behind the Veil addresses the aftermath of these atrocities. It lays bare the anguish, grief and shame that is suffered in silence by many of Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese.

Dadang Christanto is an internationally recognised artist who has been included in many international art events including; Venice Biennale (2003), Yogyakarta Biennial, Jakarta, Indonesia (2003), Kwangju Biennale, South Korea (2000), the first and third Asia-Pacific Triennials of Contemporary Art, Brisbane (1993 & 1999), the Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brazil (1998) and the Sydney Biennale (2010). His work is held in major public and private collections around the world
