Gallerysmith welcomes Fiona Hiscock
Fiona Hiscock‘s practice emerges from a centuries-old tradition of decorative utilitarian ceramics and explores the relationship between early colonial domestic ware and the artist’s own Anglo-Celtic heritage. While largely expressing this as a conflict in earlier works by adorning pitchers, vessels and cassoulets with illustrations of introduced flora, Hiscock has recently become more engaged with the narrative of her Australian identity by depicting native species, predominantly Banksia, on a range of coiled and hand-built vessels. These objects form the ‘canvas’ upon which Hiscock applies her botanical imagery allowing the artist’s abiding interest in the natural world to flourish. Fiona Hiscock will present a new body of work in October this year.
