NOTES
NOTES
Part of Sewards' SHIFTING CURRENTS series, these works have been inspired by her recent visits to Australia’s Ningaloo Reef and Lord Howe Island’s fringing reef. These trips, along with reef videography have provided direct reference for the creation for Ghosts in our Oceans. It is a four panel unique state piece created using non-toxic polymer gravure etching plates and beautiful viscous pigments, it was hand pulled on Sewards' wheeled etching press. Two panels incorporate a partial second layer of Japanese printmaking papers, chine-collé method.
The fragility of coral reefs is highlighted here with the images of corals floating as ghosts, bleached yet beautiful with hints of their original hues. Here they drift into dark voids, eventually they will disintegrate and lay silently on the Ocean floor. This work is a reflection on the beauty of coral reefs and a reminder to respect and tread lightly.
