About
Jim Pavlidis
This delicate series explores the changing light within and upon the familiar housing commission towers in inner Melbourne. These towers, dotted across the inner city are imposing fixtures on the urban horizon and constantly changing. During the day the colours shift with atmospheric conditions as illustrated in Tower 1-9, while at night they sparkle with movement and activity, drawing attention to the many lives housed within.
Pavlidis has created a deeply human series that invites reflection on housing, equity and belonging within these important urban communities.
"The Richmond Tower is one of 44 such towers throughout Melbourne built in the 1960s and early 1970s. In 2023 the Victorian Government announced it would demolish the towers and redevelop the sites." - Jim Pavlidis, 2025
