FINALIST IN WYNNE PRIZE 2026

Gallerysmith is delighted to share that Keith Burt's sculpture Horseman has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Wynne Prize. Congratulations Keith!

Keith Burt, Horseman, synthetic polymer paint, oil, on plaster, 25x20x11cm

The Wynne Prize celebrates two major categories of art: Australian landscape painting and figurative sculpture. Diverse representations of our country appear alongside the variety and ingenuity of contemporary sculpture.

"I love sculpting with my hands in an expressive manner, finding the feel of a piece as a form emerges from the clay. With Horseman, I moulded the clay and cast it in plaster. I then primed and painted the plaster, a process I have been experimenting with for a few years.

Horseman is loosely inspired by George Lambert’s 1920 painting A sergeant of the Light Horse. The pose of the sculpture echoes the subject’s downward gaze and quiet intensity, while the colours reflect the tones of the landscape in Lambert’s iconic portrait." Keith Burt, 2026

Burt's work will be exhibited among the 52 finalists at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from May 9 –  August 16, 2026.
