Adriane Strampp‘s painting Brume has been selected as a finalist in the 2016 Sulman Prize. Her work will feature in the finalist’s exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW.
ARTIST STATEMENT
As an intuitive painter I focus not on the landscape itself but rather on our deeper, ephemeral relationship with memory and experience of places once visited.
The work begins with drawings and photographs taken as reference before being abandoned as the intuitive painting process takes over, blending both memory and imagination, leaving the viewer to find their own sense of familiarity, and to decide what is real and what is not.
Brume draws on a recent trip to the more remote lakes in northern Wisconsin and the Victorian landscape, merging two places I know well to create a new, ambiguous and fictional landscape with an overlaying sense of familiarity.
