Rachel Coad’s paintings in this series District depict moments in the lives of rural Australians in the post war era. They are derived from and influenced by photographs from the mid-1950’s taken in a remote wheatbelt town in Western Australia. These works seize a moment in time at the early stages of life – they portray simple sporting accomplishments, small celebrations and the promise of a bright future.
Coad’s signature muted palette links the contemporary artwork to images from another time. The white background isolates the figure focussing attention on the emotion of her subject and to emphasise the austerity of rural life.
