Gosia Wlodarczak's drawing Hera - Dust Cover Prue (after Empress Irene, Byzantine Mosaic, 12th century, Hagia Sophia, Istanbul) was selected as a finalist in the 2024 Paul Guest Drawing Prize. Congratulations Gosia!
Melbourne-based, Polish-born Gosia Wlodarczak is a cross-disciplinary artist whose work spans performance, interactive situations, installation, sound, photography, and moving collage. She refers to her practice as trans-disciplinary drawing. Wlodarczak records her environment as she sees it in real time, tracing and retracing the visible.
‘Hera - Dust Cover Prue (after Empress Irene, Byzantine Mosaic, 12th century, Hagia Sophia, Istanbul)’ is inspired by a Byzantine mosaic depicting Empress Irene of Athens and is conceptually guided by the mythos of Goddess Hera. Before the canvas was stretched, it was draped over a subject’s body, and their unique topography formed the contour on which Wlodarczak completed a performance drawing. The result is a visual and physical time capsule, spanning continents and decades, transcending language and linear time.
