KYLIES SOAR THROUGH PERTH CORPORATE TOWER

KYLIES SOAR THROUGH PERTH CORPORATE TOWER

We are thrilled to unveil a striking installation by renowned Nyoongar artist Christopher Pease in Perth's CBD. Djert Kala Koorliny (Birds Going Home) comprises two large flocks of 'birds' that move in flight through the tree canopy (pergola structures) of one of Perth tallest corporate towers. The installation expands the visual narrative of the site on which the artwork was installed, and integrates elements of Country as it existed prior to settlement.  Pease's concept for the space, inspired by a painting drawn from the existing collection, also includes a vibrant 5x9m rug (pictured below). Pease's painting, Watidji Country, kylies and rug are installed in the same space, bringing together many elements of Nyoongar Country and culture.

Pease's work frequently explores themes of Nyoongar identity and the impact of colonisation, reflecting on Australia's complex history. Djert Kala Koorliny not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the space it occupies but also creates an active and ongoing dialogue between past and present.

Pease says, "Each Kylie has its own individual markings to give it its own identity. This is an ongoing practice that is still used today in song and dance. The ochre linework on each Kylie is derived from traditional Nyoongar body painting, informed by research at the University of Western Australia and the Western Australia Museum."

With immense gratitude to our wonderful client, art consultant and the amazing on-site team. Our heartfelt congratulations goes to Chris for realising this magnificent project.
