KIRSTIN BERG’s work combines elements of painting, collage and sculpture resulting in expressionist assemblages of charcoaled and pigmented paper. Central to Berg’s practice is the need to establish order from chaos; to make sense of a world where every landscape (social, political, personal) rests on shaky ground. During the period in which these works were developed, Berg often mixed ash collected from the bushfire affected areas around Victoria with pigment and the remnants of other burnt foliage to create a subdued palette for her deeply transcendental artworks. These works describe concurrent themes of the tranquility and imminent danger present in nature.
