Rachel Coad wins the $50,000 Black Swan Prize

Indian Summer, Rachel Coad's winning work in the Black Swan Prize.

Rachel Coad has been awarded the 2016  at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Her winning portrait of fellow artist Waldemar Kolbusz was selected by a panel of judges including Angus Trumble, Thea Costanino and former Director of AGWA, Alan Dodge. The judges said: “The winning artwork has a scale and presence and the subject’s personality has been captured superbly. The artist has moved beyond the photo realism and creates a sense of nostalgia through the use of sepia tones, ….  It is a painter’s painting of a painter.

The Black Swan Prize, now in its 10th year, is one of the richest art awards in the country with the winning artist receiving $50,000 in prize money. The prize is proudly supported by the Lester Group.
