Rachel Coad has been awarded the 2016 at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Her winning portrait of fellow artist Waldemar Kolbusz was selected by a panel of judges including Angus Trumble, Thea Costanino and former Director of AGWA, Alan Dodge. The judges said: “The winning artwork has a scale and presence and the subject’s personality has been captured superbly. The artist has moved beyond the photo realism and creates a sense of nostalgia through the use of sepia tones, …. It is a painter’s painting of a painter.”
The Black Swan Prize, now in its 10th year, is one of the richest art awards in the country with the winning artist receiving $50,000 in prize money. The prize is proudly supported by the Lester Group.
