Tempest, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

June 10, 2016 - November 20, 2016

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery presents a group exhibition, Tempest. Tempest is a major new art exhibition conceived and developed by internationally acclaimed curator Juliana Engberg

With its roots in the Shakespearean play of the same name, Tempest will transform TMAG’s galleries into a world of shipwrecks and stormy seas, romance, discovery, tragedy and magic, creating a new and exciting experience for visitors.

Valerie Sparks’ Prospero’s Island, 2016, was exhibited as a wallpaper installation. You can view more from this body of work on Sparks’ website.

“The Tasmanian landscape provides a rich source of imagery from which to create an interpretation of Shakespeare’s Prospero’s Island. Prospero’s Island – South West  and Prospero’s Island North East chart the narrative arc of ‘The Tempest’ from vengeance to forgiveness. The wild cliffs of Tasmanian’s south coast are brought together with the sublime stillness of the north and east coasts to explore the theme of displacement, which is central to both The Tempest and the turbulent history of Tasmania. This work was commissioned by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery for ‘Tempest’ 2016. With the support of the Australia Council.” – Valerie Sparks
