Cloudlight is Neville French‘s debut exhibition with Gallerysmith.
“My porcelain vessels are inspired by the silent spaces and ephemeral effects of light, weather and time in the local environment.
In this new series of works I have turned to the mystery and beauty of skies; the stillness and soft changes of light in clouds at dawn and dusk and the feelings evoked.
My intention is to distil an essence of place and evoke notions of quietude and transcendence through the expressive use of glaze and its relationship to form, tactility, space and light. High alumina glazes have been used that fuse closely with the porcelain body to give a soft luminous glow to the interior spaces of forms. These elemental vessels are wheel thrown and altered with subtle shifts in coloured glazes that are built gradually in multiple thin layers to provoke gentle luminosity and illusory space to stimulate the imagination.”
