National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Awards 2019

August 10, 2019 - November 3, 2019

Christopher Pease‘s large scale painting Kartwarra was selected as a finalist in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Awards (NATSIAA) in 2019. The work was exhibited in the finalist’s exhibition at The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

The Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA) exhibition captures the attention of the nation, with an inspiring breadth of work from emerging and established artists.

Each year Telstra NATSIAA sees an increasing variety of art forms and media, collectively demonstrating the richness and diversity of current contemporary Indigenous artistic practice, and the pre-eminence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, nationwide, within the visual arts.

Kartwarra originates from Pease’s body of work Minang Boodjar, which featured at Gallerysmith in 2019.

“Armed with a combination of colonial imagery, library records and historical documents, Pease confronts the white settler accounts of history. Herein lies the strength of his work; using western frames of reference to lay bare inconsistencies. He invites a deep questioning of the myths propagated by early explorers – and indeed their claim on land which had been home to the Minang/Nyoongar for many thousands of years.” – Marita Smith, 2019
